Paws in the Park - Something to do this weekend
This weekend is Paws in the Park in Kent. One of the best dog shows in the UK. One that really is a great day out for both you and your dog and something that we would highly recommend you visiting if you are close by this weekend.
Here is a quick list of some of the things that you and your dog can do at the show:
Dash 'N’ Splash: For those dogs that like water the brand new K9 Aqua Zone includes ‘Dash 'N' Splash’ a fantastic attraction where dogs sprint along a 30ft ramp and then jump into 40ft pool of water.
Horse and Hound: A relay race consisting of two teams racing head to head on identical courses. Each team consists of an agility dog with handler and a pony and rider. The dog negotiates a tight course consisting of jumps, tunnels and weave poles and only when the dog and handler are both safely back in their pen can their pony and rider set off on a jumping course that takes up the whole length of the main arena.
British Carriage Dogs: The British Carriage Dog Society runs the annual national Trials, the purpose of which is to demonstrate and test the Dalmatian's traditional role as a companion to man. The trials demand both control and fitness, as dogs are judged on their obedience and capacity for endurance.Newfoundlands: Their principal activity at the show, with their family the Leonbergers will be carting. There will be numerous experienced owners on their stand to tell you all about these very special dogs.
Dashing Dalmatians: Gefion Dog Training Club were asked to give demonstrations of the Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Schemes at Paws in the Park in 2007 and the Bronze team were made up entirely of Dalmatians. Teresa worked out a routine set to the music of Cruella de Vil from the film 102 Dalmatians with some input from the group.
K9 Athletics: There will be a measured long jump, open to all dogs with separate competitions for different sized dogs and a Hurdles event.
My Dog's Got Talent: Can your dog dance, skateboard, sing or do tricks - beg, roll over, twist etc. Then enter them into the My Dog’s Got Talent Competition for the chance to win some fantastic prizes.
Dogstable Course consists of a handler and dog negotiating together an obstacle course consisting of tunnel, gate, jumps and road works etc.
Flyball: At the Hop Farm in September, there will be a Flyball Tournament for trained teams with an open and multi-breed competition. There will also be the opportunity for visitors to 'Have a Go'.

Keep dogs cool - with Tuna Lollies
Here is a great idea from Linda Ward (https://twitter.com/
BTW - you can also follow Pooch & Mutt on Twitter (https://twitter.com/poochandmutt)
For this recipe you need:
- Tins of tuna
- Water
- An Ice tray
- A freezer
Simply mash the tuna with some water, place in the ice tray and freeze for 2-3 hours.
Once frozen, give to the dogs, for them to enjoy
And there you have it.... a simple way to get cool, happy, healthy dogs.
Also,
If your dog gets scratchy in the heat you should read these 2 testimonials:
http://www.poochandmutt.com/bionicbiotic/bionic-biotic-testimonials/jack-russels-ibs-scratching/
http://www.poochandmutt.com/bionicbiotic/bionic-biotic-testimonials/comet-skin/
One is from a Jack Russell and one is from a St Bernard.
Both had trouble with itching and scratching, which was made worse by the heat.
Having a bit of Bionic Biotic with their food has worked wonders for them.

'Poocherazzi' - celebs shots from Macmillan Dog show
Yesterday's Macmillan dog show did not have quite the celeb quality of previous years where guests included Liz Hurley and the Duchess of Cornwall.
I do have to admit that I am not exactly a seasoned celebrity spotter - I judged the 'perkiest pooch' class yesterday with Rob Alleyne (from BBC3's Dog Borstal), Julian Fellowes (Oscar winning writer of Gosford Park) and a very nice blonde 'celebrity' lady, who I have to say I didn't even recognise.
Here however are a few snaps of some of the celebs I did see:

Kevin Sacre (who played Jake in Hollyoaks and featured in the reality show 'The Underdog Show') with girlfriend Camilla Dalerup (from BBC's Strictly Come Dancing)

Dexter Fletcher (Press Gang, Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels, Hotel Babylon)

Trinny Woodall (Trinny & Susannah)

Egg-citing Easter Pooches

Bunnies, eggs, daffodils and that magic word...chocolate! That’s what Easter is all about, but don’t forget that whilst chocolate is harmless to us, it is like poison for our four legged friends.
Be sure to remind friends and family about the dangers of chocolate to your dog this Easter and ask everyone to take extra care to keep all those tempting treats out of your dog´s reach. If you are organising a kids egg hunt make sure that pooch is kept on a lead and well away from any tempting hidden chocolate eggs. Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is a stimulant related to caffeine and it can cause vomiting and diarrhea, restlessness and hyperactivity, excessive thirst and increased urination, a rapid heart rate and excessive panting. If ingested in large quantities it can even be fatal. Although it takes larger dogs longer to be affected by a helping of chocolate the severity of it depends on the dogs's weight, the type of chocolate and the amount consumed. For more information about chocolate and dogs see Chocolate Toxicity - Toxic Amounts of Chocolate. We thought we would lend a paw at keeping those powerful noses in check over Easter and giving you a few ideas about other things you can do to distract your pooch from all that chocolate mania! Hide n’ seek - once you have enjoyed your human egg hunt your dog can join in the fun later on Easter Sunday, try hiding a few dog treats from him/her around the garden and let your mutt do the sniffing! Dog friendly Easter treats – Present your mutt with a rawhide easter egg treat or check out the latest doggy gadgets to distract him/her from all that egg-citement – Top ten pet gadgets. You could even get a Carob Dog Easter Egg, a healthier alternative to chocolate. If you’re feeling very generous or guilty perhaps, Holly and Lil is offering Pooch and Mutt fans 10% off its ranges of colourful and egg-travagant collars. Visit Holly and Lil and enter ‘poochandmutt’ on checkout to get your discount.
Easter Fairs and dog days - If you fancy getting out for the day you can visit the Easter Fair and Dog Show at Gables Farm in Plymouth on 11th April. The Newcastle Dog & Cat Shelter is also holding an Easter Fun Day on Easter Monday 13th April at their Benton Farm Shelter. The Americans never cease to amaze us with their crazy love for dogs, check out the Long Beach Pet Parade which takes place in California this Easter. Take a day trip out to Norwich and visit the Pooch & Mutt stand at the East Anglian Game & Country Fair which takes place 25 and 26th April. You can enjoy displays of Dog Docking and even meet the Horse Whisperer, Gary Witheford!

Take your dog on holiday - You don’t have to leave your dog home alone this Easter why not take your pet with you? Check out the Dogs Trust listing of dog friendly cottages. A percentage of your holiday will also go to the charity. Go to www.dogstrust-cottages.co.uk or have a look at the Mirror’s guide to taking your dog on holiday here.
What to do if your dog does swallow chocolate! - If you think your dog may have eaten a harmful amount of chocolate, call your Vet or take your dog to an emergency animal hospital immediately! Symptoms will usually begin within two hours but sometimes it could also take as long as 24 hours. Delaying treatment could be a fatal mistake. Contact the PDSA for advice or contact your local vet via Yell.com
